We’re putting Kiwis on patrol.
Scammers are making off with $200 million from Kiwis each year1. In response, we’ve teamed up with ANZ to bring back Officer Frank ‘Ponch’ Poncherello and Officer Jon Baker from the hit 80s TV show CHiPs, to encourage Kiwis to be on patrol for scams and fraud.
Despite 69% of Kiwis over 65 expressing confidence in spotting or avoiding scams, Age Concern and ANZ emphasize that scam tactics are continually evolving.
To reinforce this message, Age Concern is using Erik Estrada’s familiar face to remind people they have the right to hang up, say no, and reject unsolicited calls, texts, and emails. Estrada, famously known as Ponch, was a staple on Kiwi TV screens, and his return aims to draw attention to the various scams circulating and how to avoid them.
ANZ has supported Age Concern South Canterbury in delivering the Silver digital literacy programs to boost online confidence. Now, with the return of ‘CHiPs,’ they introduce a scam awareness training guide, a scam academy website, and toolkits for Age Concern centres. With these resources we hope to teach good practices to help people stay safe from scams and encourage them to be confident in rejecting dubious communications.
” Scams and fraud affect everyone. Our trusting and polite nature can unfortunately make us more vulnerable to scammers,” said Chris Thomas, Manager of Age Concern South Canterbury. “Bringing back Ponch encourages people to adopt a more cautious approach to scams.”
While scam types remain consistent, their methods evolve. Banks play a crucial role in protecting customers and keeping banking services secure. Raising awareness and educating our customers is essential as scam tactics change frequently. We want people to stay vigilant.
ANZ research shows a significant confidence level among over 65s in spotting scams, but continued education and investment in technology are vital to combating scam tactics.
