SuperGold Card to Become Legal ID, But Many Seniors Wanted More from Budget 2026

The Government has announced a significant upgrade to New Zealand’s SuperGold Card, with plans to introduce an optional version that can be used as an official form of photo identification. The new card will include a photograph and enhanced security features, allowing it to meet identification standards required by banks and other service providers. The upgrade will remain free for eligible New Zealanders aged 65 and over.

For many older people, this change will provide a simpler and more convenient way to prove their identity without needing a passport or driver’s licence. The upgraded card is expected to be available from October 2028 and will also have a digital option available.

While the announcement has been welcomed by many, some seniors have expressed disappointment that Budget 2026 did not include more direct measures to address the rising cost of living. Older New Zealanders continue to face increasing costs for essentials such as food, housing, insurance and healthcare, and some had hoped the Budget would provide additional financial support.

The SuperGold Card remains one of the most widely used benefits available to older New Zealanders, providing access to discounts and concessions across the country. The upcoming upgrade aims to make the card even more useful in everyday life, while also helping seniors access services that require official identification.

At Age Concern South Canterbury, we know that both practical support and financial security are important for older people. We will continue advocating for the needs of seniors and keeping our community informed about changes that affect them.
