The Growing Cost of Living Pressure on Older New Zealanders

Older New Zealanders across the country are continuing to face difficult financial decisions as the cost of living remains high.

A recent article from RNZ highlights how some pensioners are cutting back on everyday items such as coffee, meat, outings, and other small comforts in order to stay within tight household budgets.

For many older people living on fixed incomes, rising grocery prices, power bills, insurance, rates, and other essential costs are placing significant strain on day-to-day life. Reports and interviews with pensioners across New Zealand show many are carefully planning spending, shopping for specials, reducing heating use, and going without non-essential items just to make ends meet.

While budgeting and careful spending have always been important skills, many older people are now finding that even a modest lifestyle is becoming increasingly difficult to maintain.

At Age Concern South Canterbury, we know that financial pressure can also impact wellbeing, confidence, and social connection. Feeling unable to go out for a coffee, attend activities, or enjoy small treats can contribute to loneliness and isolation.

If you or someone you know is finding things difficult, please remember support is available. Reaching out for advice, support, or simply a conversation can make a real difference.
