Older Kiwis Struggle With the Rising Cost of Living

For many older New Zealanders, meeting everyday living costs is becoming increasingly challenging.

The cost of essentials such as food, power, housing and other household expenses can place significant pressure on people living on fixed or limited incomes. For some, this means having to make difficult choices about where their money goes each week.

A recent RNZ article explores the financial pressures facing older Kiwis, highlighting the challenges some are experiencing as the cost of basic necessities continues to rise.

At Age Concern South Canterbury, we know that financial wellbeing can have a significant impact on older people’s overall quality of life. Being able to afford the essentials, remain connected with others and participate in the community all contribute to ageing well.

The conversation around the cost of living is therefore an important one. Older people should be able to enjoy their later years with dignity and security, without constantly worrying about whether they can afford the basics.
