Aging is not just a number; it’s a celebration of life’s experiences, wisdom, and hardiness. At Age Concern South Canterbury, we believe that growing older is something to embrace and honour. It’s an absolute privilege to witness the richness that our older folk bring to our community.
We are focused on empowering older people to live fulfilling, fun, connected lives. One of the ways we celebrate aging is through the Steady As You Go (SAYGO) Falls Prevention Program, which encourages physical well-being. These classes produce proven results and help participants build strength, balance, and confidence. Good health, mobility and independence are key to enjoying life at any age.
Last year we delivered the Well Balanced Exhibition – another project that highlights the beauty of healthy aging. The interactive roadshow featured activities like wobble boards and dexterity challenges and encouraged attendees to take charge of their physical health while enjoying hands-on and social experiences.
We celebrate aging by fostering connections through programs like the Age Concern Visiting Service and our social activities, which are designed to reduce isolation, loneliness and promote belonging. Whether it’s a chat at one of our regular gatherings or sharing stories over a cuppa, these events demonstrate the importance of staying connected.
Our advocacy work is another cornerstone of celebrating aging. From supporting accessible transport and housing solutions to promoting age-friendly communities, we are proud to give voice to the needs and contributions of older adults.
We’re also thrilled to be supporting the South Canterbury Drama League play, “The Secret Lives of Extremely Old People”, a unique theatrical production directed by myself, Chris Thomas. This show will share compelling and humorous stories from older people (all in their 90’s), with insights into their incredible lives and celebrating the contributions they make to our community. Through laughter and moving moments, this production aims to challenge stereotypes about aging and showcase these amazing, vibrant personalities.
At Age Concern South Canterbury, every day is an opportunity to celebrate aging. Let’s all take a moment to recognise the remarkable individuals and family members who enrich our lives with their knowledge, stories, and love. Together, we can create a community that treasures its elders and ensures aging is not just a journey but a celebration.
