Driving Smarter, Staying Safer – Age Concern’s Refresher Course Perfect for Senior Drivers

On August 29th, senior drivers gathered at Community House in Timaru for the Age Concern South Canterbury “Staying Safe” Refresher Driving Course. Led by Robyn Willis, the workshop offered participants a chance to refresh driving skills, review road rule changes, and discuss today’s driving challenges. For many, including Marian Sawers, the course was both eye-opening and reassuring.

One key takeaway for Marian was the proper use of indicators at roundabouts. “I didn’t realise I wasn’t signalling correctly. It’s so important to signal when you’re leaving the roundabout, even if going straight through,” she said.

The course helped participants think more critically about their driving habits. Marian, who drives mostly in Timaru but occasionally to Christchurch, felt the workshop made her more aware, especially in busier traffic. She also appreciated tips like the intersection rule: ” top of the T – goes before me.”

Marian praised Robyn Willis as an “exceptionally good” instructor who connected well with older drivers.

After 70 years of driving, Marian found the course offered valuable reassurance. “Even if you think you’re a good driver, it’s helpful to stay updated,” she said.

The course not only provided useful information but fostered a sense of community, as participants shared similar experiences. Staying safe is something everyone can benefit from, no matter how long they’ve been driving.
