With summer in full swing, bringing long days and warm weather, it’s the perfect time to pause and reflect. Christmas often brings joy, celebration, and togetherness, but for some, it can also highlight feelings of loneliness or disconnection. If you’re finding this season difficult, know that you’re not alone, and there are people and places ready to support you.
Here at Age Concern South Canterbury, we see firsthand how vital community connections are for our well-being. If you’re on your own this Christmas, reaching out could be the start of something meaningful. Our organisation and many others are here to listen and help you find ways to connect, whether that’s through one of our programmes or by introducing you to other local groups.
Timaru is home to a vibrant network of community groups that welcome new faces year-round. Whether it’s a hobby group, a walking club, or a shared meal at one of the community lunches, there’s something for everyone. Groups like Neighbourhood Support, the Drama League, the SJ Cafe, or the Creative Fibre group offer opportunities to meet others with shared interests. Sometimes, the simple act of joining a new activity can open the door to lasting friendships.
As we head into the New Year, let’s hold onto the good that comes from staying connected. No matter your age, reaching out to others can bring a renewed sense of purpose and belonging. This Christmas, I encourage you to take that first step—whether it’s calling a friend, attending a community event, or dropping by our office to learn more about what’s available.
The season reminds us of the value of togetherness, but it also teaches us resilience. If you’re feeling isolated, don’t hesitate to contact us at Age Concern South Canterbury. Let’s work together to make this summer and the year ahead a time of connection and renewal.
Warm regards,
Chris Thomas
