Would you like more company? Age Concern South Canterbury understands that loneliness is one of the biggest risks to an older person’s health and mental wellbeing. This is why our Visiting Service is so important, providing a lifeline of companionship and connection to our older community members.
The Visiting Service pairs volunteers with older individuals who might be feeling isolated or lonely. Volunteers commit to visiting their matched companion for about an hour each week, engaging in friendship, conversations, sharing interests, and participating in activities. The impact of these visits is highly valuable, fostering connections that can change and enhance the lives of both the volunteers and the older adults they visit.
Take Amanda and Mary, for instance. Amanda has been visiting Mary for the past two years, and their bond has grown into a beautiful friendship.
Amanda says, “We have become such good friends, and I think I need her more than she needs me.”
Mary, now in her eighties and living alone, used to feel very lonely before Amanda started visiting. She speaks warmly of Amanda’s kindness and eagerly anticipates their weekly visits and occasionally, outings. What started as a simple act of kindness has blossomed into a lifelong friendship, filled with mutual care and joy.
The benefits of the Visiting Service extend beyond alleviating loneliness. It fosters a sense of belonging and community, bridging the gap between generations and enriching the lives of all involved.
Older adults can gain a renewed sense of purpose and connection, while volunteers experience the fulfilment that comes from giving their time and forming deep, meaningful relationships.
By volunteering with Age Concern South Canterbury’s Visiting Service, you can make a real difference in someone’s life while enriching your own. Whether you are seeking to form new friendships, give back to the community, or simply share your time with someone who would deeply appreciate it, this service offers a rewarding opportunity. Join us in combating loneliness and enhancing the wellbeing of our cherished older community members. Together, we can create a more connected and compassionate South Canterbury.
